Baby Steps

Pretty Strong Medicine

Last Week's Weight: 178 (woof)
Current Weight: 176.4
Change: -1.6
Total Loss: -51.6

So, last week's weigh-in sucked, hence what prompted my "Come to Jesus" post about what's going on and how I seriously needed to get eating under control. And lo and behold, I actually tracked everything honestly all week. And even with a bar crawl involved, I managed to lose weight. Now let's keep doing that, self.

I read a post by SkinnyMeg last week about the mental struggle of losing weight and she really nailed what's so hard about it. Now that I've been "maintaining-ish" a 50+ pound weight loss for about two years (sidenote: where has the time gone?!), I definitely reached a point of too comfortable, hence the weight gain. Teaching yourself to lose weight involves a very serious mental shift where you have to go from "I want this, so I will have it" to "I want this, but I need to make a healthier choice." Learning that healthier choices don't have to feel like deprivation is a big part of weight loss, and learning to be okay with hunger is a big part too. I'm a chronic over-eater, and so I have to continually remind myself that IT IS OKAY to be hungry sometimes. It's a work in progress, and probably something that will always be a struggle for me. I just have to keep reminding myself how much better it ultimately feels (mentally and physically) when my eating is better controlled. Baby steps!

Anyway, the coming week includes two happy hours with friends, deep dish with friends visiting from out of town (yes, I will save my points for that), and dinner out with my aunt and uncle who are visiting Chicago. It will definitely be a test of my self control, but I'm up for the challenge! Plus, I want to look and feel great on my birthday in two weeks, which means I need to keep it in check until then ;)

Weekly Goals and Weekend in Review

I feel like I start every week with an empty agenda, but then by mid-day Monday, there's something to do before and after work every day! Not that I'm complaining at all. I have two modes: 110% and dead. And productivity breeds productivity, so I'm glad to have a full week ahead! Here's what my workouts look like for the week:

  • Monday - Sproing @ Sproing Sport
  • Tuesday - FlyBarre60 @ FlyBarre
  • Wednesday - GoRow @ Go Row Studio
  • Thursday - Core Fusion Barre @ Exhale
  • Friday - Brawl @ Barre Code
  • Saturday - Soul Survivor @ Soul Cycle
  • Sunday - Die.
Admittedly I'm a cardio-holic, but I'm noticing definite changes in my body since I re-committed to my workout schedule back in mid-January. However, I'm still looking to really push my game (and my body) to the next level! Many barre studios recommend barre class at least 3-4 times a week, but up until this point I've only been going about once a week. Starting this week, I think my plan will be barre twice a week (Tuesday/Thursday), with cardio Monday/Wednesday/Friday, and then Saturday or Sunday will usually be a yoga day.

Next weekend I'm trying to coordinate a Soul Cycle outing with a bunch of girlfriends to check out the studio they just opened in Chicago. While spin still isn't my favorite, I think I've gotten past the point of TOTALLY hating it. Plus, I'm curious to see what all they hype is about (and you can get a promo code for a free class on their Facebook page and my favorite price for anything is free). Even if I like it though, there's a 0% chance it'll become a regular thing considering Soul Cycle isn't on ClassPass and they're classes are $30 a pop which LOLOLOLOLno.

Do not be deceived by the blue skies. It's still only in the 40s here.
Speaking of free classes, this past Sunday included a fun outing with friends to celebrate the launch of Barre Code's in-room videos at Hyatt Hotels! To celebrate the launch, Barre Code hosted an event at the Hyatt Regency downtown, featuring free workouts, free blowouts/dry styles, free manis and massages, build-your-own trail mix, and more! Some girlfriends and I took full advantage of all of the above. Needless to say, I wish every Sunday was as fun! Also I don't know what kind of wizardry was involved in making my hair look like this, but it is my life's goal to try to replicate this look.

On to the goals! Riding the productivity high from this past weekend, I'm bringing back the weekly goals I used to do much more regularly. Here's is what I'm working on this week:
  • 10,000 steps a day. I had a pretty bad lull where I was almost never hitting 10K a day, but I've been better about getting back into the swing of things. Here's hoping I can nail this goal all week.
  • 100oz of water a day. When I talked last week about reeling in my eating, I've also been working on upping my water. It's easy to eat out of boredom, but staying well-hydrated goes a long way to keeping mindless eating at bay, hence why I'll be focusing on making 100oz a day my norm again.
  • Track everything. So far (this week), so good. I know I won't lose weight if I keep cheating myself on being accountable with the tracking, so tracking I must do.
  • Divvy at least two times. Last August I bought a year membership to Divvy, Chicago's bike-share system. This gives me access to rent bikes all over the city. Now that it's starting (slowly but surely) to get nicer, I want to start Divvy-ing around again for additional exercise!
What are your goals this week?

Friday Fives

Hey! It's me! Writing more than one post a week! Let's see if I can be better about that.

Here are some ramblings in list form:

1) I'm really making a concerted effort to be better on WW this week. I forgot how hard it is to get in the mindset of turning down free food all the time. Particularly when my office had free donuts TWICE yesterday, lunch from Potbelly yesterday, bagels and donuts this morning, and dessert this afternoon. Did I mention we also have candy clients so there are literally candy bowls all around the office? Walking to the bathroom is like candy bowl minesweeper. Send help.

2) Holy soreness batman. This week began with SWEAT on Tuesday, Go Row on Wednesday (I still owe you a review, it is coming!), Bar Code for the first time ever on Thursday, and Brawl (my fave) this morning. I joked this morning on Instagram that when I drink coffee before Brawl I feel like Kristen Wiig in Bridesmaids.

3) I'm doing this new thing called not Tindering on the bus in the mornings and instead reading actual books (well, Kindle books because this is 2015). I've read some really good books this month:
  • Dark Places by Gillian Flynn - good and also very dark, but definitely not as good as Gone Girl.
  • True Story by Michael Finkel - so so interesting and a pretty quick read. BUT TRUST ME WHEN I SAY IF YOU LIKE THIS BOOK DO NOT SEE THE MOVIE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE BITTERLY DISAPPOINTED. And that's all I gotta say about that.
  • Jailhouse Doc by William Wright - did you know I am obsessed with the prison system? Because I am. This book is a jail doctor's jaded account of working behind bars.
  • When No One is Watching by Joseph Hayes - also a pretty quick read about the divergent paths two former friends' lives take when one frames the other for a car accident.
  • The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown - I guess I'm currently obsessed with rowing because I've been going to rowing class once a week and I'm also reading this book. I don't typically like historical non-fiction, but this one is really good so far. Also while reading a passage this morning in Dunkin' Donuts (coffee only, no donuts) I almost cried, so there's that.

4) Chicago has decided not to enter springtime with the rest of the planet. The highs this week have barely topped 50 degrees. I bought the best shorts romper ever a few weeks ago and I haven't been able to wear it yet. Sidenote: I have tried on no less than 50 rompers in my life, and they basically never fit. By some miracle of god, this LOFT romper that I bought online without ever trying on in stores is by far the best-fitting romper I have ever tried on. Sidenote again: if you pay full price for something at LOFT, you paid 50% too much. Everything there goes on sale 40-60% off at least once a month, so wait for sales!

5) TGIF. That is all.

Anyone have fun plans this weekend? Tell me about how you spend springtime so I can live vicariously through you and your experience with temperatures above 50 degrees.

Tuesday Truths

I admit .... I haven't been good about eating. I'll be on for a few days, and then I throw it out the window during the weekend. Or I have a good day... that ends in me "rewarding myself" with peanut butter straight out of the jar at home. Or my points refresh on Wednesday, and I eat all of my weekly points by Sunday, and then continue to go over until Wednesday. It's not good and this is a cycle I need to break.

I am... despite my food failures, killing it in the gym(s) on a near-daily basis. Still keeping up with ClassPass, and still taking 5-6 classes a week. I took yesterday off because I wasn't feeling too hot after traveling on Sunday, but I made up for it with an ass-kicking this morning at SWEAT via tabata-style workouts. I even ran treadmill sprints with no achilles pain!

I feel... the tiny familiar twinges I haven't felt in awhile. Of apathy when it comes to caring about what I eat. Of throwing my hands up and saying "eff it" every time I'm confronted with unhealthy choices. Of wanting to withdraw and just be alone instead of making plans with friends. I was diagnosed with depression my senior year of college, and while I've come a long way since then, every once in awhile I can feel those little feelings creeping back in. Work is good. Family is good. Friends are good. But still there are things that are making me feel mehhhhhh. My weight, for one. Social (read: dating) things, for another. But reacting as I have been is not going to make me any happier, and it certainly isn't getting me closer to my goals.

I won't... continue to let myself fall back into old habits, and this path I've been on is a slippery slope. I know what it feels like to justify "rare" indulgences, which are actually not so rare. I know where that path leads, and I don't want to go back there.

I am... a product of my choices, not of my circumstances.

I am... stronger than the obstacles that stand in my way.

Quick Update

Last Week's Weight: 179 (post-vacation WOOF)
Current Weight: 175
Change: -4
Total Loss: -53

Hello! I'm back from vacation. Physically. The mental return to real life was significantly more of a struggle. I made super healthy kale salads for lunch all week and they taste like I wish I was still YOLO-eating ham and cheese croissants every day at the resort. SIGH.

Anyway, returning from vacation last Tuesday night made it hard to immediately jump back into healthy habits as quickly as I wanted to. I didn't sign up for any workout classes until Friday, and I didn't grocery shop until the weekend. But now I'm back and ready to get back on track. Also, I saw this quote on Instagram this morning, which was a perfectly timed message that I needed to hear:

So here's what I've been up to and will be doing for the rest of the week:
  • Sunday - Brawl @ Barre Code
    • "Oh, a week off from working out wasn't too bad. This class will be fun," I said. Holy moses I was so sore on Monday.
  • Monday - OFF
    • Like I said. Sore.
  • Tuesday - Core Barre Fusion @ Exhale
    • It was booty day. Feel the burn.
  • Wednesday - Hot Power Fusion @ Corepower Yoga
    • I desperately needed this.
  • Thursday - GoRow @ Go Row
    • One of my favorites! Recap forthcoming.
  • Friday - Sproing HIIT @ Sproing Fitness
    • One of the weirdest/craziest workouts I've done since joining ClassPass. Recap also forthcoming.
  • Saturday - Some class. Maybe something new! TBD.
  • Sunday - Likely Bikram Yoga
And, on top of that aggressive workout schedule, I've been doing a much better job of returning to tracking and planning my meals this week. AKA (sadly) no more spontaneous taco/churro binges. At least for a few weeks :) My goal is to definitely be in the 160's for my birthday (a number I haven't seen in far too long), which is about 5 weeks from today!
