Crisis Averted

If we're being technical, it was Weigh-In Tuesday because other scales cannot be trusted and I caravanned to Cleveland yesterday right after work. Semantics!

Either way, excited to see a pretty big loss this week. I'm still trying to figure out my non-running workout plan, but I committed to doing arm workouts and yoga four times last week. My yoga month is almost up, but I'm hoping I'll be ready to start getting back into running in the next week or two. If not, I think I may finally give into the Jillian Michaels peer pressure and try a more regimented plan. Maybe 30 Day Shred or Ripped in 30? Any suggestions, JM veterans?

Otherwise, we're in full-blown Thanksgiving preparation mode at my aunt's house. I come to find out this morning that GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE DID NOT MAKE THE MENU. 

I'll be honest (and un-American) for a moment. I don't like stuffing. I pass on the sweet potato marshmallow casserole. I don't care for pumpkin pie. I think turkey would taste better if it was a Honeybaked Ham. 

Just give me all of the mashed potatoes & gravy, dinner rolls, appetizers, and green bean casserole.

So, in order to avert this complete and total meltdown crisis, my cousin and I are going to be the crazies heading to the store on Thanksgiving eve to get the essentials so we can save Thanksgiving with green bean casserole for all. Wish us luck.

Eleven Questions Blog

I was tagged in this question list months ago, and I just now remembered it was sitting in my drafts! So, instead of a Transformation Tuesday, I'm answering 11 random questions below. 1. When did you start blogging and what prompted that decision?

I've drawn a lot of inspiration from other weight loss bloggers who share their journeys, especially when I was just starting out! And, selfishly, I wanted a way to capture exactly what I'm going through at different points throughout the way. Even just six months later, it's funny (and often embarrassing… such is my life) to look back and read what I wrote.

2. What one thing are you most proud of in your life?
Running a half marathon! It's a goal that is so far beyond where I thought my limits were, fitness-wise, and in an activity that I spent the first 23.5 years of my life hating. Running that half marathon really proved to me that with discipline and commitment, I'm capable of so much more than I might think. Also, it really sparked a love of challenging myself, and I have serious plans to run more half marathons and beat my time next year… and my dad ;) 

3. What is your favourite way to work up a sweat?

Running. Also, hot yoga can be pretty therapeutic.

4. What is your next fitness-related goal (ie. run a certain distance, lift a certain weight, etc.)?

One day I hope to be able to run a sub-2 hour half marathon.

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Fitness-wise? Still running with completely new goals… and Jillian Michael arms (HAHAHA a girl can dream).

Weight-wise? Happily maintaining at a weight where I can still eat and enjoy life. 

Life-wise? Working in my same line of work (social media marketing), which likely will have completely changed by then (side note: I joined Twitter five years ago and was the only person I knew on there for at least six months). Hopefully I'll have started and finished grad school (YIKES). I'd love to have paid off my student loans, to have a place to call my own, and to have an english bulldog named Archibald.

6. What's your favourite way to spend a day (should you find yourself with absolutely no plans or obligations)?

Like I did on my birthday weekend: getting my nails done, eating at one of my favorite restaurants (Spanish tapas, yum!), lounging, and reading a good book. Basically, I'm 24 going on 54.

7. What is your favourite meal?

MarBaum (my mom) makes a pretty phenomenal pot roast and homemade ice cream cake. Anything she cooks, really. From restaurants? I feel guilty for saying this in a city of such awesome food choices but, uh, I just really love the Pasta Da Vinci and cookie dough cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory. *hangs head in shame*

8. If I could visit one place in your hometown (or where you currently live), where would that be and why?

I've never been to Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry but I've heard it's OMGTHECOOLEST so I really need to go there!

9. If you could have lunch with any celebrity, who would it be and why?

Gerard Butler because obviously.

10. What's the first website you visit when you turn on your computer (or phone?)...other than your own blog ;)?

After the death of Google Reader (RIP), I spend a lot of time on Feedly. 

11. If I was to look in your purse, what would I find?

A minimum of two lip glosses, my red wallet, my work keycard, a flash drive, an Oscar Mayer weinermobile whistle (truth), and exactly 896 bobby pins.

Friday [High]five

Five days of blogging in a row. Someone call Guinness!


I actually started writing this post with the intention of making it less of a stream of consciousness than usual… and I failed. So you've been warned.


I really can't say enough good things about this recipe. I was not a believer in the church of spaghetti squash until I finally found a recipe with enough cheese/butter/milk to make it palatable. This is IT. And for those days when I just want to eat a whole lotta something (read: daily), it's a good low-guilt option. Next time I think I'm going to try it with the addition of turkey sausage or mushrooms.


If you know me in real life (or follow me on Twitter), there's a good chance you know about my utter fascination with personality tests and analysis. I discovered this gem about Myers Briggs personality types and socio-economic status last week and shared it around the office. So interesting!

PS- I'm an ESTJ. Other famous ESTJs include Hillary Clinton, Dr. Phil, Michelle Obama and Emma Watson. If you want to take the test for yourself, here's a pretty decent one that you can take online for free.


If even in my life I am a little sad, I need to remember to watch this video: the definition of "dance like no one's watching" (in a place where people most definitely are).

Fun fact: even though this video was actually recorded in 2009, it recently resurfaced. The video went so viral that it bumped Bon Jovi's 25-year-old hit back into the Billboard Top 100.


Last Thanksgiving.
I'm going back to Cleveland on Tuesday for Thanksgiving! Ever since my family moved to Charlotte in '09, I don't get to see all my extended family in Cleveland all that often, so I'm really excited for a few days of relaxation and family time (and green bean casserole… OH the green bean casserole).

Announcing: A Blogger Secret Santa!

I'm so so excited to finally announce what we've been plotting for weeks!

I'm teaming up with one of my favorite bloggin' ladies, Mary from Babble + Bloom, to host A Mary Christmas Carol (a blogger secret santa)! 

I'm not sure exactly when I first started following Mary's blog, but two years ago she hosted a gift exchange, and I got matched as Mary's secret santa. I had so much fun scheming to find the perfect gift for her, getting my own lovely gift from my secret santa, and watching the whole exchange bring a bunch of bloggers together. No Run, No Fun

Three posts in three days? Who does this girl think she is?

Well, this may look like the same weight as the last time I participated in weigh-in Wednesday (here), but I had bounced up into the 168/169 range for a week or two, so this is actually a loss for me. 

The bigger revelation for me is that I was able to get a loss when I haven't really run at all in the last two weeks. As I mentioned, I'm dealing with achilles tendinitis issues, which has pretty much completely killed my running game since the Hot Chocolate 15K about 2.5 weeks ago. Running comprises roughly 90% of my workout regimen, soooo I've been going nuts and not knowing how to fill the void. Did I mention I hate gyms?

So, I've been attempting to fill the running void with yoga (3x a week), and I had the realization last night that if I actually want to see a difference in my core, I need to, oh, work on my core. SO CRAZY RIGHT?!!!? So, expect me to be pinning up a storm for exercises I can do until I'm back to running. 

Oh, and I'm sure my no-takeout hiatus is also mostly responsible for this week's weight loss, which means, sadly, my Sopraffina Italian Chef salad love affair is on the back-burner so I can focus on healthy eats. I actually love cooking, I just hate grocery shopping living in the city and having to lug back 19 bags the 3.5 blocks from the grocery store because I am too cheap to take a cab and too proud to get a grandma city grocery cart.

PS- This lil' blog of mine is undergoing a facelift! It's still a work in progress, but hopefully it's significantly less ugly than it was before.

After my one-year fitnasty-versay last week, I posted this picture on Facebook and HOLY FREAKIN' COW to say I was blown away by everyone's likes and comments would be an understatement.

I am selective about what I share with the blog-world versus with the real world, but I threw caution to the wind and shared that baby with the general public. It's a weird and vulnerable thing to admit to making such a big change, especially when, as I've said before, I didn't have poor self esteem at my highest weight. But a one-year anniversary seemed as good a time as any to "announce" the progress I've made. So, to everyone—blog friends and real-life friends—who left me such sweet words, thank you!!

With a big announcement came a lot of questions, so I figure I'll tackle them as best I can. And insert disclaimer here about how I am certainly no health/fitness expert, I just know what's worked for me.

What made you decide to change?
Losing weight has always been in the back of my mind since, oh, elementary school. I finally realized that I was tired of making excuses and letting my weight creep up. I knew easier for me to make a change now than it would be 10 years from now. My a-ha moment came when I saw the photo on the left, above. And also this one:

My highest weight was about 20lbs higher than I wanted to admit, and I even debated using my fake "starting weight" (212) instead of my real starting weight (228). Because lying to myself had worked so well for me in the past (HAH). I was done trying to deceive myself that 7-11 sandwiches were healthy and that running for 15 minutes twice a week was keeping my weight gain at bay. 

How do you stay motivated?
The short answer? I don't. I stay disciplined.

The long answer? 

Do I indulge? Uh, yeah. Do I mess up? Yep! But I've learned that healthy decisions don't have to feel like I'm depriving myself of unhealthy favorites. I don't need cookies just because they're in the office, and I don't "deserve" to eat bad foods just because it's rainy/I'm PMSing/it's the weekend/I want them. Seeing consistent results has made it easier for me to stick with a plan, even at the times I don't want to. 

What made you stick with it [this time]?
See above. It's not about motivation to hit a dress size, to be in shape for an event, to prove to someone else that I can do it. It's about being disciplined enough to want this for myself, because I deserve to be happy and healthy and confident. Period.

What's your goal?
Taking into account my height and body type, I think 150lbs is a reasonable goal (my doctor agrees). Basically, I want to be at a weight I can maintain while still living a life (food and exercise-wise) that I can enjoy.

What are your tips for someone who wants to lose weight?
Be honest about what and how much you are eating. Keep a food journal and write down everything!

Start integrating more fruits and veggies into your diet. Instead of pretzels for a snack, have some carrots and hummus. Instead of chocolate, have an apple and peanut butter. 

Entire cucumber = standard snack.
Yes, my coworkers think I'm weird.
Just because you mess up, doesn't mean the whole day/week/month is ruined. It's like accidentally dropping your cell phone and chipping it, and then smashing the whole damn thing with a sledgehammer.

Figure out what type of exercising you like and stick with it! If you hate pilates, try zumba. If you're an uncoordinated bumbling fool who can't follow choreography to save her life (spoiler alert: that's me),  try running. Don't like running? Try swimming, elliptical, biking, etc.

Drink enough water! 

If you can't trust yourself around certain foods, DO NOT BUY THEM. This is the reason I don't buy: Naan, Stacy's Pita Chips, Nutella, cheese cubes. 

What do you think about Weight Watchers?
I wouldn't be where I am now without it! WW makes it easy for anyone to easily track their food on a daily basis. It takes the guesswork out of tracking foods by simplifying everything down to a points system. If you are honest and accountable to the program, it will work.

Do you go to meetings?
Nope. I'm a WW-online member. I track every single thing I eat using the app. 

Isn't tracking annoying?
For some people, yeah. For me, it's the only way I can be honest and accountable with what I'm eating. I still listen to my body and eat if I'm hungry and already out of points for the day, but tracking helps me stay within a healthy range. It probably takes me 3-5 total minutes a day. 

How do you eat so healthy?
I plan ahead as much as I can. I cook at home so I know exactly what goes into my meals, and I know what to eat at my favorite restaurants to stay within my points. Honestly, I eat a lot of the same foods all the time. On a day when I'm planning an indulgent dinner, I'll make sure breakfast and lunch are really healthy. If I'm going to a restaurant,  a lot of times I pick out what I'm going to eat by looking at the menu online beforehand. 

Do you ever cheat?
If eating the occasional mozzarella stick is wrong, I don't wanna be right.

Getting in the Game

After a weekend that included an Ugly Sweater 5K and plenty of birthday shenanigans for my friend's birthday, it's back to the daily grind. On the plus side, last full week of work before Thanksgiving!

If you've landed on my blog from Amy at Diary of a Fat Mommy, welcome to Monday's Weekly Goals Linkup! I'm sorry to see Amy depart from the linkup, but am hoping to meet up with her when she's over in my neck of the woods! 

So, last week?

1) Back on the wagon. Success! I brought my lunch AND made dinner every day last week! I didn't even give in to getting an emergency diet coke in the afternoon, so double win!

2) Get in five workouts. No, unfortunately not. I wish I had a better excuse, but I think I've developed achilles tendinitis in my right leg, which has really been cramping my style. I tried running on Wednesday and didn't make it .2 miles before I had to stop. So far everything I've read has more or less told me to stop running for at least a few weeks. I never thought I'd see the day when I was sad NOT to run, but… I'm sad/frustrated not to run. I'm going to give myself a week off, and then see where I stand.

3) No more candy. Winner winner chicken dinner! I did eat a cake ball on Friday, though.

Here's what I've got on the agenda for this week:

1) At least 3 yoga classes. I've found that most yoga poses don't irritate my achilles, so I'm going to try to make it to at least 3 classes this week. Gotta get bang for my Groupon buck!

2) Water. I've been really slacking on water consumption the last few days. Time to get back to basics! My goal is 100oz of water a day. Sidenote: Don't know how much water to drink? Aim for half your body weight in ounces.

3) Keep it healthy. I was good about cooking and not ordering take out last week. I want to keep the momentum going! Which means… I need to grocery shop. Ugh.

How Do You Measure a Year?

365 days ago was the day I decided to change my life. 

Who am I kidding?

365 days ago I finally committed to Weight Watchers, mostly expecting it to fail me and that I'd be back to my thrice weekly Jimmy Johns habit in no time.

Welp. I was wrong. 

Gloriously, happily, 61-pounds-lighter wrong.

In one year...

  • 37 weeks of weight losses (including a 7-week streak of straight losses)
  • 539 miles run (since March '13)
  • 102 blog posts
  • Tight size 16 to a size 8/10
  • -26% of my original bodyweight
  • Went from a 38 minute 5K to a 27:53 5K
  • One half marathon
  • Zero regrets
It's a strange thing to lose so much weight, when you never really imagined yourself actually doing it. Not that I didn't think I was capable of doing it, just that I didn't really think about it. Period.

Yet here I am, approaching weights I haven't seen in ten years (ten years!). And while I never had low self-esteem as an adult, my confidence is the highest it's ever been. Every day isn't perfect, but I'm learning and growing every day. It hasn't always been easy. I've sacrificed nights out with friends for half marathon training, greasy french fries at trivia, happy hours after work, and yes, even my beloved Jimmy Johns (…sometimes). 

But I've also gained so much more: perspective, self control, determination, and confidence. Despite the weirdness of having a completely different body, I feel more "me" than ever before. Had I know then how good I feel now, I would've done this years ago. But I wouldn't take back one single moment of this journey, setbacks and all. 

Cheers to the next 365 days, and to finally getting Fitnasty for Life :)

Much to my dismay, I did not blossom into a dainty flexy yogi princess after enduring three whole yoga classes. Who knew extended stretching in a heated room could be so dang hard?!

On the plus side, I've been to two classes by the same instructor, and I actually really do enjoy them. Despite usually being the most inexperienced person in the room, I've gotten really helpful corrections, and I can already see improvement in my chaturanga sequence. Maybe it's the sun salutations talking, but for it being a Monday night, I'm in a shockingly good mood. I think maybe they spike the incense.


So last week's strepisode (I'm trademarking that) put a serious cramp in my lifestyle. I didn't grocery shop mostly because I sustained myself on orange sherbet (pronounced SHER-bert always and forever) and Campbell's soup. Once I did feel better, my lacking pantry meant I ate out most meals last week. And then I wonder why I'm not losing weight. Sigh, will I ever learn?

On that note...

1) Back on the wagon. Even though I wanted to be a whiney lazy baby on Sunday night because a) it was cold and b) The Amazing Race was on, I forced myself to go grocery shopping. Oh, adulthood. I've got all the goods to make some healthy recipes this week, which I fully plan on doing. No eating out at lunch! Except on Friday when my office orders in. 

2) Get in five workouts. We got our first snow in Chicago today, meaning motivation to leave my bed/couch is at an all-time low. Luckily I conned myself into yoga tonight (if only because I knew the studio would be warmer than we keep our apartment…), so that's one workout down. I've got a 5K fun run this weekend, so my plan is to get in at least two runs and hopefully two more yoga classes this week. 

3) No more candy. I honestly don't even really have a sweet tooth, but I am powerless to resist the office candy bowl. Our secretary allegedly didn't get as many trick-or-treaters as she expected, so she's unloaded her candy stash upon us. I hereby swear that I will not take another piece of candy outta that bowl.

TGIFriday and Downward Dog Epiphanies

This is my 100th post! Time flies, huh? 

On with the show!


Holy moses I am sore from yoga yesterday. But when I wasn't experiencing the unique pain of salty sweat beads pouring into my eyes during my sad excuse of a downward dog, I had an epiphany. Backstory: when I bought this Groupon for a month of unlimited yoga, my thought process was basically: "Psh this will be sahooo good for releasing the stress in my muscles and I can't wait for some pigeon pose and I'm just going to be flexy and bendy and awesome. Bring it on!" 

The epiphany is: I'm bad at yoga. And that's okay! I think when running became anything less than pure torture to me, I somewhere along the line started to assume that, because I "conquered" running, I also developed superpowers at, oh, everything else athletic? WRONGO. So I am humbly accepting my position [literally and figuratively] as the worst yogi in the room, and going to spend the next month working on it. Starting with an actual beginner class tomorrow. Namaste biatches.


Oh yeah. So while I was going stir crazy on the couch earlier this week thanks to the strep plague, I maybe threw my name in the lottery for the Nike Women's Half Marathon DC 2014! I'd been mulling over signing up for a destination half marathon next year, and I finally took the plunge. My fate is now in the hands of the race gods, who will let me know whether I got a spot or not on December 6th. If so, I'll be DC-bound to tear up 13.1 miles of fun in our nation's capitol on 4/27/14. DC or bust!


The only plans I have for this weekend are to go birthday dress shopping with my friend (her bday is next week) and to meet up with a college friend for dinner. No early runs! No races! Nothing else! A <mostly> commitment-free weekend makes me happy in ways only Shannon can appreciate. This girl definitely needs some R&R. And by that, I mean I'm ready to finish Insurgent and dive straight into Allegiant. 


Look who still hasn't cleaned her mirror but isn't letting that stop her from taking shameless selfies!? I've had this sweater and it used to be tiiiight. Old clothing validation is the best kind of validation. And BTW these black pants might be the most comfortable pants I own. Target, FTW. (No Target doesn't pay me for the amount of promotion I give them. But they should.)


I'm up to something sneaky for the holidays with one of my blogger bffs Mary from Babble + Bloom! First of all, you should check her out because she's one of my absolute favorites and she's always making impressive life lists and paleo recipes that even make this cheese-lover consider making the jump (at least for one meal). Monday Woof

I woke up this morning with strep. Nothing like kicking off the week with a sobfest in the doctor's office at the Minute Clinic because you can't even swallow your own saliva! I rarely get sick, and this came on SO suddenly (took a nap post-race yesterday afternoon, and woke up with a sore throat). Thankfully, I think the meds are finally kicking in and I'm hopefully on the road to recovery.

Onto happier things! Yesterday (Sunday) was the famed Chicago Hot Chocolate 5K/15K! I went out Saturday night to an Instagram meetup (the drink of choice was straight water for this gal) with a bunch of really fun ladies I've been talking to through IG for awhile. It was so much fun to meet everyone, but I wish I could've stayed out later with them! I called it a night around 10pm so I could get a solid night of sleep before the race.

When I woke up yesterday morning, I legitimately considered switching from the 15K to the 5K. I just wasn't feeling too hot (foreshadowing, maybe?) and woke up with a headache. Still, my roommate and I headed downtown to meet up with our other friend. It was SO INSANE. It's interesting to run races in such a big city because even "small" races are still a few thousand people. But Hot Chocolate was just crazy. I think I read that there were over 50,000 participants this year! We made our way to our corral and were off!

It really was a perfect day for a race! Slightly warmer than I expected, but clear skies and not windy at all. The first mile or so of the course wound through lower Wacker (tunnels below the city), which made the time pass pretty quickly. By the time we got to the 5K/15K course split I was realllllllly thinking about cutting over into the 5K group. But I somehow convinced myself to stick with it. We headed south on Michigan Ave. until about mile 5, and it started to get a little boring as the crowds thinned out. Aside from some toes falling asleep issues, I felt pretty good through the second half of the race. Surprisingly, there were a lot of small hills in the second half (unheard of in Chicago!) and a lot of runners around me were walking. I told myself that I HAD to run up the hills, and I could walk for a few seconds at the top if I wanted to. That challenge kept me trucking, and soon the finish line was in sight! 15K in 1:37:32, about a 10:28 pace. Not the pace I was shooting for, but I'll take it!

PS - The chocolate at the end of the race was SO good, but I'm not a huge sweets-eater so I felt kinda sick after I stuffed my face (oops). My roommate and I decided we want to start a wine and cheese fondue race for the other salty-snacking runners :)

Goals are going to be pretty brief this week while I try to get back to 100% from the strep. Hoping for a speedy recovery so I can get back to it!

1) Yoga. I bought a Groupon for a month of unlimited hot yoga (the studio has non-hot classes too) and I'm hoping I'll feel up to it later in the week! I haven't done yoga in awhile so I'm excited to try out this studio. I think yoga will be a good complement to my running, so here's hoping it works out.

2) Hydrate. The whole swollen tonsils thing is killing me because I've been so hungry and thirsty but can't really do anything about it. My throat is finally starting to feel a little better, so hopefully hydrating will get me back to 100% faster.

3) Sleep. Minimum of 7 hours a night, preferably 8. Time to buckle down on bedtime.

Five on Friday!

I mean, yeah, I fell off the face of the earth again this week. But here's my Five on Friday!


I'm running the Hot Chocolate 15K this weekend, because let's be real, my main motivation for running involves the promise of food afterwards. So those 9.3 miles will be spend envisioning finish line indulgence of delicious chocolate, followed by brunch (obviously). My [not so secret] goal is to maintain a 10:15 pace throughout the race, which is a hair slower than my 10K pace last month. I ran 9 miles last weekend at exactly a 10:00 pace, so fingers crossed that I can do it! 


I went to the doctor today for my annual checkup. When the nurse practitioner weighed me, she looked confused and then asked if I had lost weight. UH YEAH I DID. She said she didn't even recognize me and that she thought she had the wrong patient! My doctor was excited about my progress, and told me she definitely thinks 150lbs is a reasonable goal weight that I'll be able to maintain. Great success!


The Fit Train

Ain't no secret that one of my favorite blog ladies Tiffany at The Fit Train! She's been going through a fitness hump, and her solution is to offer a little challenge to get #Fit4Christmas. In a desperate attempt to break into the 150's by the end of the year, you bet your bottom dollar that I signed up to join her. Here are my starting measurements (accountability!).

Bust- 40.5
Waist- 32.5
Hips- 39.5
Thighs- 26 [R], 25.25 [L]
Calf- 16 [R], 16 [L]
Arm- 12.5 [R], 13 [L]
Weight - 166.8

I'm mildly amused that my right thigh is bigger than my left, while my left arm is bigger than my right. I took before pictures too, but I'm not showing those bad boys until there's improvement to be reported. 


Speaking of measurements, my calves, like Miley Cyrus, can't be tamed. These babies have been 16" since the very beginning, and they show no signs of shrinking. I still can't fit into normal width boots which is seriously cramping my ability to find some cute brown riding boots. My only goal this weekend, aside from running, is to hit up DSW and try to find some boots that can contain my calves. 


Ohhhhh yeah, THIS. If I'm being honest, I basically blew off blogging this week so I could re-read Divergent and Insurgent before I dive face-first into Allegiant, the final book in Veronica Roth's dystopian trilogy. If you haven't heard of this series we can't be friends, it follows a similar premise and style to the Hunger Games trilogy. The main character is a 16-year-old girl named Tris who lives in futuristic Chicago, in a society divided into five separate factions. Like Hunger Games, society is a mess, and Tris has to learn how to survive all of the brutal situations she's thrown into.
